A guide to
buying a handpan
Purchasing a handpan involves several steps to ensure you get an instrument that fits your needs and preferences:
Research and Budget: Understand what handpans are, including their types, scales, and sizes. Set a budget, as handpans can range from a few hundred to several thousand dollars. Good quality handpans typically cost around $1,500 to $3,000 USD, with high-end ones going for $5K-7K. Handpans around this price range are of high quality and are generally made in the UK, US, Vietnam, Bali, and Europe.
If you prefer to spend less, you can get one for $300 on Amazon , but the sound quality is quite low. You can test it out for 30 days and then return it if you don’t like it.
Identify Your Preferences:
Scale: One of the enchanting aspects of handpans is that they usually consist of just a single scale. This simplicity enables the player to take a more intuitive approach to play and concentrate more on emotional and spiritual inspiration while playing. Choosing a scale that resonates with your heart, emotions, and spirit is crucial, or perhaps it’s more about finding the scale that connects with you. The scales can be grouped into a few simple categories: Minor, Harmonic Minor/Phrygian, Dorian, Major, and Mixolydian. Below is a brief description of the emotional qualities associated with each, listed in order of their popularity on the handpan.
Minor
The Minor scale often evokes a sense of mystery, and depending on how it's played, it can also feel intense, driving, or suspenseful. Minor scales are by far the most popular. C# Minor and D Minor are particularly favored, with F# Minor and G Minor also being quite popular.Celtic Minor variations are also very popular. These scales offer a blend of mystery and positive resolve, making them both relaxing and intense. Examples include C# Minor, D Minor, and Eb Minor scales.
Harmonic Minor/Phrygian
Next in popularity are the Harmonic Minor and Phrygian scales, often referred to as Hijaz and Tarznauyn. We consider them our most intense and suspenseful scales, often used in classical music to build intensity and suspense before resolving. They are also common in Middle Eastern music and evoke a sense of drama. Some of the most popular scales include: D Phrygian, G Harmonic Minor, E Harmonic Minor, F# Harmonic Minor, and G Phrygian. However, if you plan to play with others in traditional Western music keys, these scales might not be ideal. But if you're interested in exploring the richness of Middle Eastern music, these scales are a great place to start.
Dorian
The Dorian scale, particularly in E Dorian and F Dorian, is also quite popular and sometimes referred to as “La Sirena”. Similar to the Minor scale, the Dorian reduces some of the tension and offers a more meditative and contemplative emotion.Mixolydian and Major
If you are seeking sounds and melodies that are uplifting, positive, and happy, then you might want to choose C# Mixolydian, D Mixolydian, E Mixolydian, or E Major. For those looking to play in the most popular musical scales with others, C Major is undoubtedly the best choice.Among the most common scales are:
D Kurd or D Celtic
E La Sirena
E Amara
F Pigmy
G Hijaz
Size/Number of Notes: . Handpans typically have a diameter of 45–65 cm, a height of 15–30 cm. Some makers also produce smaller handpans that may be better suited for children or those who prefer a more compact instrument.
Handpans typically come in 8 to 11 notes. Decide how many notes you want and the range you need
Tone and Resonance: Each handpan has a unique sound. Listen to samples online to find a tone you like.
Find Reputable Makers: Look for well-reviewed handpan makers or sellers. See below for recommendations.
Test the Instrument: If possible, try the handpan in person to evaluate its sound and feel. If buying online, ensure the seller has a good return policy in case the handpan doesn’t meet your expectations.
Care and Maintenance: After purchase, follow care instructions to maintain the handpan’s condition and longevity.
By following these steps, you can find a handpan that suits your musical style and personal preferences.
